Problem

Black people are dying from skin cancer at a dramatic rate due to late-stage diagnoses and societal misconceptions about skin health.

Insight

Barbershops represent
a safe environment to
foster genuine male
friendship and trust.

Solution

Transform barber shops into early diagnosis centers where getting a haircut becomes an opportunity for barbers to educate patrons about skin cancer.

By tapping into the trust and open relationship within barbershop culture, we’re using the influence of barbers with their patrons to protect and improve health literacy about skin cancer.

If the barber sees something questionable he can assist the patron with booking an appointment with a local dermatologist’s office before he even leaves the barber shop.

Cancer Cutters isn’t an ultimate diagnosis; it’s an early warning detection system designed to identify skin abnormalities before they become significant medical issues.

Inspired by classic hairstyle guide barbershop posters, it outlines the signs and abnormalities of skin cancer and melanoma.

The Cancer Cutters Instagram feed goes into greater detail of the ABCDE alphabet guide to recognize melanoma, each post describing what to look out for and how early detection is crucial to survival.
